About the role and team

We have an opportunity for an experienced Associate or Senior Associate to join our growing General Insurance practice in Melbourne, working on a range of property damage and insurance coverage disputes. Our General Insurance team in Melbourne is part of our national General Insurance practice. 

We act for many of Australia’s largest corporate insurers, as well as international insurers and government schemes.

Led by industry-leading partners including Matt McDonald and Liam Campion, our high-performing team specialise in all types of insurance claims, ranging from the highly complex and technically challenging, through to simpler, volume-driven claims.  An opportunity exists for an experienced and passionate advisor and litigator to join our team and to work on complex large loss subrogated recoveries (including mass tort and class action litigation), property damage liability defence litigation, and to advise on a wide range of insurance policy coverage and indemnity controversies.

You will be responsible for and have carriage of your own files, with appropriate supervision.

You will be responsible for:

  • analysing policy wording and advising clients on coverage and stakeholder management;
  • reviewing of documents and preparation of evidence;
  • drafting correspondence to the Court and third parties;
  • conferencing with witnesses and preparing witness statements;
  • preparing briefs for counsel;
  • drafting Court documents and attending Court;
  • appearing at mediations;
  • drafting client advices; and
  • drafting letters of instruction to experts.

About you

You will ideally have the following skills and experience:

  • 3+ years of post-admission experience in insurance law;
  • experience in providing indemnity and coverage advice to a range of insurers would be a plus;
  • experience in large loss property damage recovery/liability work will be well regarded;
  • experience in managing and running litigation end-to-end through the Courts;
  • clear, concise legal writing and drafting skills;
  • strong attention to detail; and
  • a team-orientated approach to working.
